Rhyme Schemes Explained (AABB, ABAB, ABBA and More)
What rhyme schemes are, what each one actually demands of you, and why AABB is the most forgiving while AAAA is the most punishing. With practice order.
What a rhyme scheme is
A rhyme scheme is a notation for which lines rhyme with each other. Each line gets a letter; lines sharing a letter rhyme. So AABB means lines one and two rhyme, and lines three and four rhyme separately.
That is the whole idea. What makes schemes interesting is not the notation but what each one demands of your memory and your vocabulary.
The four classic schemes
AABB — lines 1+2 rhyme, then 3+4 rhyme. The most forgiving scheme, because every rhyme gets a second attempt: if you fumble the first line, the second line can still resolve the pair. Beginners should live here.
ABAB — lines 1 and 3 rhyme, 2 and 4 rhyme. Alternating. The difficulty is that you must hold the first rhyme in memory for a full bar before you use it, which is a working-memory load rather than a vocabulary one.
ABBA — lines 1 and 4 rhyme, 2 and 3 rhyme. Enclosed. The hardest of the classic four, because the pairing is split: you state a rhyme, then go away from it for two lines, then come back. Holding a rhyme across two intervening lines is genuinely difficult.
AAAA — every line rhymes. Simple to describe, relentless to perform. You need a new rhyme on every single line, with no second attempt and nowhere to hide.
Why AAAA is the hardest
The obvious reason is that you need four rhymes instead of two. The less obvious reason is that the rhyme families in English are not evenly sized.
Common endings have dozens of options — -ay, -ight, -ow. Rare ones have very few. Once you commit to a rhyme sound on line one, you have committed to whichever family that sound belongs to, and if it is a small family you will run out of words before the bar ends. Under AABB, a small family costs you one line. Under AAAA, it costs you the whole verse.
This is why AAAA feels like it “runs dry” rather than merely being hard: it is not that you need more rhymes, it is that a bad first choice cannot be recovered from.
What the game’s other schemes add
Beyond the classic four, The Rhyme Game includes three more, each targeting a specific weakness:
- AAXX — two rhyming lines, then two free lines. Useful as a halfway house: it gives you the AABB structure but only asks for one rhyme pair per four bars.
- AXAX — rhymes only on lines 1 and 3. Trains you to keep a rhyme alive across an intervening line, which is the ABBA skill at a lower intensity.
- Free — no constraint. The game still scores timing, so it is a warm-up rather than a cop-out.
The practice order that works
Do not start at AAAA. The load is multiplicative: you are learning the timing and the memory and the vocabulary at once, and when it fails you cannot tell which one broke.
A sensible progression:
- AAXX — get used to having a rhyme partner at all.
- AABB — the standard. Stay here until it is comfortable.
- ABAB — adds the memory requirement.
- AXAX — the same memory requirement, isolated.
- ABBA — the full hold-across-two-lines problem.
- AAAA — only once everything above feels routine.
At each step, drop the tempo rather than dropping the scheme. Scheme difficulty is a structure problem; tempo is a time problem. Changing both at once tells you nothing.
A note on repeating rhymes
Reusing a rhyme is legal and is not cheating. Plenty of recorded verses rhyme the same word across four lines, and listeners do not register it as a flaw if the timing and delivery are solid. Under AAAA, repeating is often the correct choice — a repeated rhyme on beat beats a novel near-rhyme that arrives late.
